Robert Maseko
Born in a line up of Lunda Kings (Mwant Yanv)Bantu roots, his family and cultures extends and stretches from central to southern Africa. The Master is travelling worldwide on international world music circuit, appearances in Orkneys, Japan, Australia and Europe add to his on going African Journey and experiences.
1989-90. Award of best Singer of the New Generation,
with Stone Binza band (Kinshasa, DRC).
1990-93. Singer Songwriter/Dancer with T.P. Roots of Africa
(Congo-South Africa) Gigs, radio & TV appearances throughout southern Africa
End 93. Founded Kwasa Kwasa Stars after leaving T.P. Roots of Africa at the end of touring in Japan and relocated to Johannesburg, appearing alongside Papa Wemba, Stimela, Sankomota, Hugh Masekela, Bayete in Wax concert in Jo’burg, recorded with Jackson Cassidy, with the Graceland of Paul Simon in Cape Town while touring Africa (Cape Town Jazz Festival).
1994-98.Robert Maseko led many Afro world music programmes before forming his own group, Robert Maseko & Chaka Chaka Zouk’s now “Congobeat” composed of best UK based Afro Congolese musicians and dancers playing and touring in all of the UK afro World venues, including gigs, festivals and pubs. Robert also runs Educative Music workshops all over the country under the Afric'Art Music Connections Label UK.
1999. He was awarded the summer grant from the African Music Promoters (Midland) & The Arts Council of England. This was followed by touring the length of the UK, including the Orkney Island. Well received everywhere, Robert Masekomade appearances on Radio and TV being interview by Peter Lewenstein for BBC African Network, and Julia Hankens for BBC NewCastle. At the turn of the century, he played New Years Eve at Royal Albert Hall, as part of the millennium celebration in conjunction with coin street festival, South Bank (directed by Adrian Evans).
1999-2000. Robert Masekocompleted his first album of the new millennium “La Cremeria” of acoustic & electric roots materials, which caught the taste of many UK DJ’s (Uncle Sam, Wala Danga, Peter Tong, John Peel,Dj Massimo Ferro) and music writers as reviewed by Graeme Ewens of Songlines Magazine as “new sensation in Classic Soukous beat and fresh, exciting, pulsating rhythms” from mighty Congo.
2000- 2002.Recorded a single Cd with Linda Clifford “ Going back to my Roots 2002”, mixed by Chris Bang &Terry Farley, released by Oli record label in London and played at radio 1 by Pete Tong. Robert Maseko also released a new live performance Cd recorded in Manchester at Band on the wall “Live and loose in Manchester”, by his fame in the African Diaspora, Robert Maseko was commissioned by GlaxoSmithkline UK and the Sound House Media Production in Sheffield to record a single cassette called “Breaking the Silence “for the awareness of HIV/Aids in the African Community based in the UK. Based on facts of his Music career, I will say it with respect, Robert Maseko has achieved a great deal in the world music circuit, where possible recognition of all efforts and contributions he has made as one of the last pioneers with no doubt He is an “Ambassadors par Excellence” Adrian Evans said @ the Coins street Festival (South Bank, London).
2003 - Once again on the road withRobert Maseko & The Congobeat managed professionally to record a live concert at the popular North West venueThe Trade Club in Hebden Bridge their fans gave them a good spirit of a groovy night on the dancing floor to obtain a Pre Mixer of African Keen Album which was finally available in February 2004. “ Its time to let everything go and dance to the Congobeat! From graceful Roots Afrobeat, with genial mix of Acoustic Cuban roots to today’s rough touch diamond of Kinshasa sounds, the golden elegant voice of singer-songwriter/bandleader Robert Maseko continues to soar above the kicking Roots Afro beats, in his latest album -“African Keen”-, he has introduced a new five to seven piece band to showcase the laid backed virtuosity of vintage guitar Pop Rumba, with a set of sparkling new compositions exploring Deep Roots Afrobeat Pop, Cuban and Caribbean connections of world routes. “- Highly spirited music” froots Magazine, May 2004. Their calendar ended with a glamorous Concert in Newcastle where Robert Maseko & Congobeat displayed their October earliest merriment at the “Africa in Newcastle Festival” , in front of fans and Barons of the North East region where he spends most of his time now working with his group performing, recording and working with different arts organisations and continuing the promotion of culture diversity through Arts & Music in schools, He is becoming popular working with the Forge in the North East and His books “Lunda People” and“The Southern Drums into Durham Schools” are coming out soon under children education programme which will cover the area of working with young People.
Welcome 2005.No great deal for 2006 as we have been concetrating more with educative projects and busy working on the making of our new coming DVD of Live Concert recorded at the whitby musicport world festival this past October 2006 which will be produced by Whitby TV and production execution by our Label check it this summer 2007. still eye on the menu Robert very soon coming with a new album title " Radio Hits" world famous radio Dj's ever Selecta" and should be on the stores around the world before this summer 2007.
